M&K is an internet based business with a physical location in the state of Alabama.  Currently we collect sales tax on sales in Alabama just like any brick and mortar business in Alabama.  Sales outside the state of Alabama may be subject to use tax.  Consumers of goods purchased on line in these states are responsible for the payment of that state’s use tax.

The supreme court has recently ruled to allow states to use internet based businesses as tax collectors for the entire country.  What this means is that small businesses like M&K potentially will be forced to collect and pay sales and use taxes for every state, locality, county, and town where a sale is made.  This is a daunting task that is not typically performed by local brick and mortar stores as they collect only local taxes, just as M&K does now.  Please voice your opinion if you wish to protect small businesses from this undue and potentially bankrupting burden.
